Girls’ Tennis Team Beats Bunnell, New Milford

Newtown High School’s girls’ tennis team defeated host Bunnell of Stratford 6-1 on April 18 and blanked visiting New Milford 7-0 on Tuesday to stay perfect at 7-0 heading into Wednesday’s match at Immaculate of Danbury (after The Bee spots section went to press).

In the win over Bunnell, Caroline Kelly earned a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Lindsey Szoch to remain unbeaten in the top singles spot. At No. 2 singles, Lauren Frazzetta also won in two sets, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jill Broadbin. At third singles, Mia Terracino battled past Natalie Groves 7-6 (9-7), 6-4. Newtown’s lone loss came at fourth singles as Alyssa Ruefenacht fell in three sets to Jennifer Tatnall. Ruefenacht won the first set 6-2, but fell 6-4 and 6-1 in sets two and three.

In doubles play, the top tandem of Julia Frattaroli and Stephanie Roman won 6-1, 6-2 over Lauren DeReinzi and Katarina Soleol. At No. 2, Maggie Kost and Annie Beier defeated Maggie Hayes and Courtney Riordan 6-1, 6-0. At third doubles, Meghan Logan and Aimee Alexander were 6-0, 6-1 winners over Lindsay Fraedrich and Lauren Jacimczul.

Against New Milford, four of Newtown’s seven singles and doubles wins came via 6-0, 6-0 sweeps as Kelly, Frazzetta, and Maria Biondi — at first, second, and fourth singles, respectively — all blanked their counterparts. The No. 1 doubles team of Frattaroli and Roman also earned 6-0, 6-0 wins.

At third singles, Terracino earned a 6-1, 6-0 triumph. The second doubles team of Kost and Beier, along with the third doubles team of Rachel Durno and Emily Jerris, also won two-setters.
