Free Programs On Gardening

BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Library will host a series of four free programs on various aspects of gardening.

All programs are free and open to the public, but registration is required. To register call the library at 775-6241 at least three days prior to each program. Programs will begin at 7:30 pm.

The library is at 182 Whisconier Road (Route 25) in Brookfield Center.

“Container Gardening” will open the series. It will be presented by Tom Rathier, from University of Connecticut’s Agricultural Experiment Station.

Pamela Weil, an editor of Connecticut Gardener magazine, will present “Garden Ecology” on May 11. Ecological gardening means protecting the earth with environmentally friendly, organic practices. Attendees will learn how and why chemicals were developed, the differences between “good” and “bad” insects, and products and tools Ms Weil has found effective.

“Gardening in Deer County” will be presented by Vinnie Drzewucki, who has written a book with the same title, on May 18. Mr Drzewucki will have copies of his book available for purchase at the program.

The final program will be on June 1.

Norma Chang, the author of  Wokking Your Way to Low Fat Cooking, will present “Growing and Cooking Chinese Vegetables.” She will use an electric wok to demonstrate her recipes and techniques, and her cookbooks will be available for sale.
