Sandy Hook Elementary School held its second "Reading Campout" of the school year on Thursday, March 2. Third and fourth grade students and their parents were invited to the school to read near "campfires" in the school's lobby.

The first Reading Campout was conducted November 10 for kindergarten through second grade students and their parents.

Students were encouraged to bring sleeping bags, blankets, books, and flashlights to read by, as the lobby lights were turned off for the event. Many students wore pajamas. Fake campfires were also set up around the lobby by volunteer staff, who were called "camp counselors" for the evening.

Language arts consultant Cynthia McArthur oversaw the event and welcomed all in attendance near the start of the evening.

Ms McArthur said the school's camp was called "Camp Read-A-Lot," and she said she hoped the event would provide quality reading time for their parents and their children.

"If you need anything we will have camp counselors walking around," said Ms McArthur.

Students snuggled with their parents and friends after the announcement, and each student opened a book and turned on a flashlight to read.
