Danbury Hospital Announces Medical Town Meeting Programs

DANBURY –– Danbury Hospital’s popular Medical Town Meeting series will begin its new season in September. The hospital announced a series for 2003–2004 that contains more than a dozen evening lectures to improve community health and wellness.

The series will focus on cancer, childhood obesity, stroke, depression, and new topics such as “Disaster Preparedness for Seniors” and will continue to address heart disease as the hospital seeks permission from state regulators to provide more advanced cardiac care to this region.

The meeting topics were selected based on new medical developments and community input at previous Medical Town Meetings, as well as requests made on the hospital’s website.

“Medical Town Meeting series attendance grows every year,” said Linda Wiseman, director of marketing and public relations. “Some of the meetings include free health screenings and all provide plenty of opportunity for people to ask questions of the speakers.”

The hospital began the community health education program more than 30 years ago. Most meetings are held from 7 to 8:30 pm in the John Creasy Center for Health Education auditorium at the hospital.

“Our health calendar also includes many other special events such as our annual mall health fair in October, children’s day in March, and cancer survivors day in June. We plan to follow this announcement with mailings and advertisements containing added detail,” Ms Wiseman said. “But people can always find our latest information, including Medical Town Meetings and our Partners in Health program on our website, www.danburyhospital.org.”

The calendar includes: September 23, “Prostate and Bladder Cancer –– Beyond the Basics”; October 14, “Childhood Obesity: A Growing Epidemic”; October 21, “All About Vein Care: New Techniques in the Treatment of Vein Disorders”; October 28, “Breast Care for a Lifetime: What Every Woman Needs to Know”; November 13, “Advances in the Treatment of Lung Cancer”; November 18, “Off-The-Cuff: New Insights on High Blood Pressure”; November 20, “C-O-P-ing With COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)”; December 9, “Be Ready! Disaster Preparedness for Seniors.”

No program is scheduled in January, but starting in February, the following topics are slated to be addressed: February 10, cardiac health; March 9, women’s health; March 23, colon cancer; April 8, sleep disorders; April 13, diabetes; April 20, bariatric surgery for obesity; May 11, senior health and wellness program; May 18, misconceptions and realities of stroke; May 25; skin cancer and free screening information; and June 1, innovations in treating osteoarthritis of the knee.
