CWU Wants To Know: Who Among Us Honors Human Rights?

Church Women United (CWU), an international movement celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, will in March be honoring those in the community who demonstrate a commitment to the cause of human rights.  Since 1941 CWU has supported programs and legislation to further equal rights for all people without regard for race, religion, gender, national origin, economic status, or physical or mental abilities.

Eleanor Roosevelt, the US delegate to the United Nations from 1945 to 1952 and chair of the committee that drafted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, asked: “Where after all do universal human rights begin? In small places close to home … they are the world of the individual person — the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Such places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination.”

The local unit of CWU is requesting that churches, community groups, businesses, or individuals nominate community members who continue to strive for the dignity of all people. All nominees will be honored on Sunday, March 6, from 3 to 5 pm, at the Newtown Church Women United Human Rights Celebration at the Cyrenius Booth Library.

Nomination forms are available at most churches in town, as well as many of the volunteer agencies. It is requested that forms be filled out and returned no later than February 7 to Newtown United Methodist Church, 92 Church Hill Road, Sandy Hook CT 06482.

Nominees and their sponsors will be notified ahead of time and formally invited to the March 6 Newtown CWU celebration.

Additional information is available from Darlene Jackson, Newtown CWU president, at 203-426-5192 or rascaroo@gmail.com.
