Cancellations, Postponements Due To Nor'easter

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning over much of the tri-state area, including southwestern Connecticut, that will be in effect from 10 pm Tuesday, March 6, until 4 am Thursday, March 8.

Heavy snow is expected, with total snow accumulations of 6-12 inches, except 10 to 15 inches across interior portions of the Lower Hudson Valley, and most of interior southern Connecticut, according to the warning.

As of 5 am Tuesday, March 6, seven of Connecticut's eight counties were covered by a Winter Storm Warning that will go into effect at 10 pm Tuesday.

*The 7 pm

March 7 Legislative Council Education Committee meeting has been canceled.

*The 7:30 pm

March 7 Legislative Council meeting has also been canceled. That meeting has already been rescheduled to Thursday, March 8. See our calendar page for updated listing and agenda.

*Due to the impending weather,

Newtown Congregational Church has canceled Wednesday morning's Pastor's Wednesday Bible Study Class as well as the Wednesday evening AWE Service.

At 7 am Tuesday, March 6, the National Weather Service was forecasting 13 inches of snow for Danbury and 14 inches for Waterbury by the time an approaching Nor'easter moves out of the early early Thursday morning.

*Newtown Youth & Family Services is closed today, as is EverWonder Children's Museum.

*Edmond Town Hall is closed today. The Board of Managers has added a 2 pm matinee of Star Wars: The Last Jedi (this week's feature) to its schedule for Thursday, March 8.

*C.H. Booth Library is closed, CHB Director Doug Lord has announced.

*All Union Savings Bank branches will be closing at noon today, according to Director of Community Relations Michele Bonvicini.

*Governor Dannel P. Malloy has announced that all nonessential state employees will be sent home early in staggered phases of 15-minute intervals beginning at noon in order to better manage the evening commute given the significant winter weather conditions that are forecast to impact the state this afternoon.

Releases are being staggered within agencies in order to mitigate traffic issues and minimize bottlenecks, the governor's office announced. State employees will receive specific instructions on their specifically designated release time from their agency heads.

In addition,

nonessential, second-shift state employees should not report to work this evening, also according to Gov Malloy's office.

*While

NYA Sports & Fitness initially announced that morning, afternoon and evening Group Fitness Classes would be canceled, and that Kidscare would be closed, the facility has since updated its plans. The full facility is now closed for the day.

*The

Ben's Bells Connecticut studio in Bethel is closed today.

*Newtown Director of Communications Maureen Will has announced, through a CodeRED notification, that "

nonessential personnel are being released today at noon. Drive carefully to your home destination."

A second CodeRED will be issued in the morning, Mrs Will added in a recorded message being delivered to all who register for the town's notifications, if there is a delayed opening of municipal offices for Thursday, March 8.

In addition,

all municipal offices will be closing at noon today.

*This afternoon's

Community Center/Senior Center Design Advisory Committee special meeting has been canceled.

*Tonight's

American Legion Post 202-Newtown meeting has been postponed to Monday, March 12.
