CAN Tag Sale Biggest Annual Fundraiser—

Bargain Shopping Benefits Newtown’s Dog Pound

By Kendra Bobowick

Canine Advocates of Newtown (CAN) is approaching an important season of fundraising beginning this month in its ongoing effort to raise awareness and support for animals at the dog pound.

Regarding the Canine Advocates of Newtown’s 6th Annual Tag Sale on Sunday, April 30, CAN Director Virginia Jess appeals to residents saying, “This has always been our biggest fundraiser and anyone who has ever been to it looks forward to it.”

The fundraising events also include civic involvement.

From the coming weekend’s pancake breakfast hosted by the Lions Club to a movie night in late May coordinated with the Children’s Adventure Center, CAN seeks support largely for a new dog pound. They also use resources to assist with veterinary care for animals up for adoption, and help purchase supplies.

Ms Jess is now focusing on this Saturday’s tag sale collection on April 29 between 1 and 4 pm. Earlier collections this month have also helped accumulate goods for the sale.

Ms Jess believes the sale will appeal to shoppers. “Items are priced really well,” she said. “We will have quite a bit of small furniture and all kinds of things.” She thinks they have enough to fill a two-car garage and its upstairs, she said.

“We have a lot of stuff, a lot,” Ms Jess said.

Dog pound “alumni” are going to be invited to greet shoppers she said. Also, one former pound dog’s puppies are coming, she said.

“Come out and meet your favorite,” Ms Jess said.

Tickets for an upcoming movie/fundraiser and annual duck race also will be on sale at the tag sale.

Events are as follows:

Saturday, April 29 — The Lions Club of Newtown is hosting a Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 am to noon. It will be held at the Newtown Methodist Church on Church Hill Road. The proceeds will benefit Canine Advocates and its Building Fund for a new pound for Newtown. Enjoy special appearances by Newtown Pound Alumnae and their families. Tickets can be purchased from any member of the Lions or Canine Advocates. Tickets will also be available at Yankee Liquor next to the Big Y.
