The Lady Lions kept their perfect season intact last week – despite an opponent’s buzzer-beating shot in a February 27 game against the Danbury Police Athletic League (PAL) that sent the game into overtime.

There, Coach Bill Girard’s Lions held on for a 34-30 victory behind the clutch free throw shooting of Julie Iwanicki and Kelley Haines.

Newtown, now 7-0, received a solid effort from Stephanie Logan, who scored 12 points, had eight steals and pulled down 15 rebounds on her home floor.

The locals defeated easily defeated the Danbury club back on January 18. Things were much more nip-and-tuck the second time around.

“They contained our transition game much better than the first time around,” noted Girard. “They packed in the zone and forced us to shoot from the outside.”

And Newtown suffered through a cold shooting night, especially in the first half when it managed just 12 points.

Things were significantly easier Tuesday afternoon as Newtown ripped Brookfield, 47-18. Iwanicki tossed in 12 points to lead the winners, while Kari Frawley added six and Tori Filler five.

Stephanie Logan was the game’s top rebounder with nine, while Stacy Gordon registered four assists and four steals.

Newtown defeated Schagticoke Middle School of New Milford, 60-20, January 26 as 11 players broke into the scoring column. Haines led the way with 16 points, while Iwanicki added 12. Gordon, Haines and Kaitlyn Murphy were the Lions’ assists leaders, while Gordon, Haines and Filler each had two steals.

Sarah Whalley, Erin Murdoch and Logan and Filler led the battle of the boards.

So can the Lions run the table?

“This is a strong team, but we’ve had other strong teams that didn’t go undefeated,” Girard said. “We still have some tough teams to play.”

Newtown was looking to up their record to 8-0 Thursday afternoon against Memorial Middle School in Middlebury. The girls will host Bethel on Monday,_February 7, and Rochambeau of Southbury on February 8. Then the girls will battle Jockey Hollow of Monroe on Wednesday, February 9.
