A Brookfield man died following a two-vehicle head-on accident at about 8 pm on Sunday, April 17, near 292 South Main Street (State Route 25) in Botsford, south of Kay Lane.(This article was re-posted at 3:50 pm, April 18, to correct information on the direction of travel of the two vehicles and to include additional information from Newtown Police Department.)

Police said that motorist Henry Petrucelli, 90, of Whisconier Village, Brookfield, died in the accident.

The other motorist, Miguel Angel Barragan-Santiago, 33, of Brookwood Lane, Shelton, was injured in the crash and then transported to Danbury Hospital by Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps for treatment of injuries, police said.

A spokeswoman for Danbury Hospital said April 18 that the hospital has "no information" on Barragan-Santiago. Barragan-Santiago reportedly has non-life threatening injuries.

The two vehicles carried no passengers.

Police said that Petrucelli was driving a 2013 Honda Civic LX sedan northward on South Main Street, as Barragan-Santiago was driving a 1999 Mazda B-3000 compact pickup truck southward there.

The right-front corner of the Mazda then struck the right-front corner of the Honda, resulting in heavy impact damage to both vehicles. Police did not say where on the roadway that impact occurred.

Police said that Petrucelli was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Sergeant Aaron Bahamonde said police have possession of the two vehicles involved in the collision and will be mechanically inspecting them as part of their investigation.

The police department's accident reconstruction unit and the detective unit are conducting the investigation. The probe will include police determining what each driver had been doing in the 24 hours preceding the crash, according to the sergeant.

Volunteer firefighters from Botsford, Hook & Ladder, and Sandy Hook responded to the accident. More than 15 firefighters responded.

The collision resulted in South Main Street in that area being closed until 2:30 am on Monday, April 18, so the police accident reconstruction unit could gather evidence for its investigation. Detours were used for 6½ hours while police were at the scene.

Botsford Fire Chief Wayne Ciaccia, who served as incident commander, was the first firefighter to arrive at the accident.

After the crash, the Mazda came to rest on its driver's side with the driver positioned partially outside the vehicle, Chief Ciaccia said.

Also, the truck had leaked about 15 gallons of gasoline which collected in a puddle beneath the vehi-cle, posing a fire/explosion hazard, Chief Ciaccia said.

Firefighters put foam on the spilled gasoline to prevent its fumes from igniting, he said. Also, fire-fighters needed to physically stabilize the truck so that it would not flip over, he said.

Botsford Fire Rescue provided lighting of the scene during the extrication, as well as during the police investigation.

Initially, Barragan-Santiago was unconscious, after which he regained consciousness as firefighters used specialized tools to extricate him from the wreckage, the chief said.

Under the intense, dire circumstances of the incident, the firefighter response to the accident went as well as could be expected, Chief Ciaccia said.

Police said the accident is under investigation and ask anyone who witnessed the collision to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203-426-5841.
