Audubon Center Readies For Earth Day

SOUTHBURY — The following programs are being offered at The Audubon Center at Bent of the River, 185 East Flat Hill Road (off Route 172).

The public is invited to celebrate Earth Day on Saturday, April 26, at the Audubon Center. Join scouts and other volunteers to plant trees or participate in a hike and water quality study of the Pomperaug River.

Earth Day was first celebrated on April 22, 1970. At that time, founder Gaylord Nelson, then a United States Senator from Wisconsin, hoped that demonstrations planned around the country would encourage lawmakers and citizens to respond to the nation’s many environmental problems. Bent of the River will host two activities at the Earth Day Celebration. At 9 am, scouts and other volunteers in the center’s parking area will plant trees for wildlife.

Visitors can also hike along the Pomperaug River and conduct a simple water quality test of this important watershed. This hike will be offered twice, departing at 11 am and 2 pm, beginning from the parking area. The Earth Day programs are free and open to the public.

The trails of the center are open to visitors every day, dawn to dusk. For more information call 264-5098.
