Alfred W. Coleman

Alfred W. Coleman, 72, the former owner and chef of the Newtown Inn, died January 27 at Ellenville Community Hospital, Ellenville, N.Y. Mr Coleman was the husband of Florence “Sue” (Wuchter) Coleman and was a resident of Ellenville since 1986 and prior to that, a resident of Newtown.

He was the father of Jay S. Degenhardt of Sandy Hook, and Margie Coughlin of Newtown.

He was born in Milford, Mass. June 27, 1927, son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Waters) Coleman. Mr Coleman was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a life member and past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 308 in Newtown. He was a former member of the Newtown Fish and Game Club and a past president of the Rondout Valley Rod and Gun Club.

In addition to his wife, son and daughter, he is survived by five other sons, Michael Coleman of New Milford, Timothy Coleman of Plainville, Daniel Coleman of Waterbury, Arthur Degenhardt of Waterbury, and Kim S. Degenhardt of Los Lunas, N.M.; four other daughters, Maureen Sanzone of Waterbury, Debora Garre of Orange, Donna Coulson of Wolcott, and Terri D. White of Warren; one sister, Dorothy Pantano of Hartwick, Mass; 21 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by three brothers, Roy Coleman, Charles Coleman and Harold Coleman.

Funeral services were held January 31 in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. Burial will be in Newtown Village Cemetery in the spring.
