To the Editor:

Many words have been written and spoken about the achievements of Julia Wasserman and Mae Schmidle and of the contributions each has made to Newtown and to this state. But I’d like to add a personal perspective.

When I first came to Newtown almost 50 years ago, Julia and her husband, Lou, were among the first to welcome me and to make me feel part of the community. Later, when I moved from Sandy Hook to a new home in Newtown, I was welcomed into a home across the road that was then about 250 years old, but whose residents were full of youthful zest. The Schmidles’ friendliness, good humor and great knowledge of the town and of its people were invaluable.

Julia has been celebrated for her philanthropy and her achievements as a legislator. But how many know the grace and graciousness of spirit that abounds in all she does. And Mae, the Lady in Red – red, the color of excitement and of action, who has accomplished so much personally and professionally for so many years.

Still, these two great ladies have had great husbands at their sides. As well as being among the most respected men in his profession, Lou Wasserman was one of the wisest and most gracious men I’ve known. And if Mae can be a pinwheel of activity and energy, every pinwheel needs a strong center around which to spin and who will hold it steady when the wind is strong. For everyone who knows Bob Schmidle, his strength and willingness to help have been immeasurable.

So to Julia and Mae, Lou and Bob – our affection, our admiration and our gratitude.
