Meserve Fund Makes Grants

The Meserve Memorial Fund awarded 24 grants totaling more than $118,844 to Danbury area nonprofit organizations including $12,200 to nonprofits in Newtown.

The Family Counseling Center, Inc., located on Mt Pleasant Road, received $5,700 to purchase a training module. A $6,500 grant went to the Merryhill Child Care Center on Queen Street to purchase a gazebo for the memorial garden.

According to Karl Epple, chairman of the Meserve Memorial Fund Distribution Committee, approval of the grants was reached after an in-depth review by the committee of 32 agency requests which totaled more than $244,000.

Also, this year 27 scholarships of $2,500 each were awarded to students pursuing a secondary degree in environmental sciences. High school seniors and college sophomores receiving first-time scholarship awards included Ryan Ignatius and Joseph Blanchard of Newtown. Joseph Blanchard is a college sophomore.
