Richard Clarke Durgy

Richard Clarke Durgy, 88, of Bethel, died January 26, at Pope John Paul II Center for Health Care. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Dawson) Durgy for 70 years.

Mr Durgy was born in Bethel on April 28, 1916, a son of the late Myron G. and Winifred (Dunlavey) Durgy.

Richard is survived by his high school sweetheart, wife Elizabeth; his daughters, Anne Warford of Newtown, Patricia Barlow of Bridgewater, and Mary Wiese of North Hollywood, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Richard enjoyed his entire life in the town he loved. His early years were spent on the original Terre Haute estate, where he worked with his parents.

In his later years, Richard worked for Danbury Housing Authority.

In his retirement years, flower gardening was his special love and the frequent gatherings with his very large family were his greatest pleasure. A lifelong New York Yankees fan, Richard also held a special place in his heart for the UConn Women’s Huskies and he never missed a game.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated on January 29 at St Mary Church in Bethel. Burial will take place at a later date, at the convenience of the family. Donations in his memory can be made to Stony Hill Fire Department, Bethel CT 06801.

Arrangements were by Bethel Funeral Home.
