U10 Dynamites Second

Dynamites 2, Brookfield 1: The Dynamites opened with a win against Brookfield. The Brookfield squad struck early and perfect crosses by Lauren Carrino and Katie Sailer failed to net an answer until Brooke Antous found Sailer to tie the score. Antous and Audrey Benson had a strong passing game. In the second half, Sailer’s corner to Grace Corcoran netted the game-winning goal. Rebecca Gavel had two memorable headers.

Bethel 1, Dynamites 0: In the second game of the tournament, the Dynamites played a tough Bethel squad and lost. The Dynamites had a good passing game and in the second half, began the firing assault on the Bethel team. But the girls were unable to score despite shots from Keeley Kortze and Brooke Antous and strong offensive pressure by Katie Sailer, Alison Kelleher and Jenna Lavelle. Grace Corcoran and Lu Hage played hard on defense.

Dynamites 1, Fairfield 0: The Dynamites then played Fairfield, and won 1-0. The girls played well together challenging the Fairfield goalie. Katie Sailer had a beautiful cross to the center of the goal, but the game remained scoreless until the second half when Jenna Lavelle scored on a long bomb.

Dynamites 2, Fairfield 0: The final game was against the second Fairfield team which Newtown won. Shots were logged by Rebecca Gavel, Keeley Kortze, Brooke Antous and Katie Sailer, with Jenna Lavelle finding the back of the net for the lead. Grace Corcoran had a save in goal and Audrey Benson was strong on defense. Lauren Carrino had the second goal of the game on a direct penalty kick right before time expired.

U10 Sparks

Sparks 5, Weston Blue 2: A first half goal by Sparks Sarah Widmann tied the game at 1 apiece going into halftime. The Sparks came out strong in the second half dominating the field with an additional 4 goals scored by Carly Swierbut and Emily Celentano with 2 each. Celentano’s first goal was assisted by Gabrielle Reisert. Goalies Swierbut and Jackie Seras each gave up one goal but the defensive line of Lindsay Merrifield, Seras, Madi Ziperstein and Kiera Sughrue ensured no balls would have the chance for additional scores.

Easton Tiny Windstorm 5, Sparks 0: The Sparks faced a tough opponent in their second game falling 5-0 in the early morning hours of Saturday. Kiera Sughrue was instrumental in the second half keeping the ball out of Newtown’s box. Carly Swierbut had multiple breakaways in the second half only to be stopped by Easton’s goalie.

 Watertown Wildfire 4, Sparks 0: The Sparks fought a tough battle in their second game of the day against Watertown. An aggressive, fast-moving team, goalie Kristen Cirone was a stand-out in the goal the first half with numerous heart-stopping saves holding the Wildfire to one goal in the half. Despite strong efforts from all the Sparks, the Wildfire scored three additional goals in the second half.

Newtown 2, Ridgefield Dynamos 2: In the final game of the tournament on Sunday, the Sparks came out rejuvenated and ready for a win. Emily Celentano scored an early goal in the first half which was match by the Dynamos. Nathalie Schickendantz played strong offense on the wing moving the ball down field multiple times. Defensive player Izzy Mawdsley was aggressive against Ridgefield’s offense in the first half. The second half brought goalie, Jackie Seras out onto the field playing defense. Seras was pivotal in numerous plays, out running and beating the Dynamos players to the ball. A second half goal scored by Sarah Widmann brought the Sparks up 2-1. The Sparks kept pressure on the Ridgefield goalie throughout the second half with attempts by Garielle Reisert, Kiera Sughrue, Mawdsley and Carly Swierbut. Newtown goalie Kristen Cirone was assisted by defensive players Madi Ziperstein and Lindsay Merrifield who helped keep the ball out of Newtown territory along with Seras. A last goal in the final minutes of the game by Ridgefield tied the score.

U10 Nuggets Tie For Second

Newtown’s U10 Nuggets finished this year’s Kickoff tournament with a tie for second place after a first-rate performance.

Ridgefield Gold 2, Nuggets 1: Newtown fell 2-1 to Ridgefield Gold in the first game.

Nuggets 2, FUSA White 0: The Nuggets came back as a renewed team to win Saturday’s game against FUSA White, with a nail-biting finish. Shea Talbot scored the first goal, and Colin Dunn brought in a second, giving the team an early 2-0 lead. Thomas Hartley kept the ball out of the Newtown net while everyone gave their all to keep the lead right up to the last few minutes — when Fairfield scored twice, threatening a repeat disappointment for Newtown. Harvey Long and Miles Martiska kept up the midfield pressure. With less than one minute remaining, the referee called a penalty against Fairfield. Colin Dunn took the kick and grabbed back the victory. With a win under its belt, the team pulled together like never before, showing everyone what they are capable of. Miles Martiska, Harvey Long, and Cory Furrier did an exceptional job passing and pushing the ball forward to the front line; Brian Montoya held the defense solidly, continually clearing the ball well across the field; Sean Conner kept showing up at critical times on defense, with at least one beautiful slide tackle; and Isaac Silverman and Aidan Schmid both added to some great plays. The two goals were scored by Shea Talbot and Colin Dunn with strong offensive help from Tyler Dickenson and with the entire team pushing forward to a 2-0 win.

Weston Blue 5, Nuggets 3: The team continued their spirited run through their final game but fell 5-3 to Weston Blue. Tyler Dickenson scored and helped set up goals. Miles Martiska continued his outstanding job in midfield with an assist to Colin Dunn, who kept up his consistent performance with two goals. Thomas Hartley defended the goal with real talent, only letting the most difficult shots get by him.

Vipers 2-2 In Tourney

Vipers 2, Bethel Maroon 1: The Vipers started the tournament on a high note with great presence on the field. Keeping the ball out of their box with fortress like ability Tricky Travis Huzina and Dominating Jackson Dooley kept shots on tremendous CJ Trivers to a minimum. Dynamite Dylan Sock scored handily in the first half and with a PK in the second.

Danbury Hurricanes Red 3, Vipers 1: Having scored early in the first the Hurricanes gained great momentum. Sock was able to answer with a PK goal. Suffering an own goal against Newtown soon after didn’t make it any easier on the Vipers’ psyche. Shining like a star thought out the match was Sensational Sean Arnold whose continuous hustle and ongoing drive was a great motivation for the team. Moments left in the game Danbury charged Strong Hold goalie Declan Sughrue resulting in an injury for Sughrue and a goal for the Hurricanes.

Vipers 4, Fairfield Red Devils 1: Moments into play time Surefire Sock precisely served up a cross from outside of the box to Henry “Pendev” Vaughan who expertly headed the ball into the net. Within minutes Sock repeated the pass to find Tremendous Travais Huzinas who too headed the ball to score. Moments later Vaughan gently tapped the ball bringing the game to 3-0 from yet another pass from Sock. Later in the second half Sock shot a rocket with his left foot to score. None of this could have been possible without the expert handling and movement of the ball from the midfield by Magnificent Jack McDermott Firice Adam Farley.

Monroe United Green 2, Vipers 0: Playing at the top of their game and showing great unity, even though suffering a loss, the Vipers played their best match to date against the highly talented Monroe. Brilliant Bryce Bissets’ determination to penetrate Monroe’s defense never faded. Human Shield Danny Schreiber showed unfaltering dedication in protecting the net. Declan Sughure and Sly Owen Sullivans’ hustle and team work on the pitch never faded. Playing man to man throughout the match Hustling Travais Huzina stuck like glue to Monroe’s star striker “Tommy Blue Shoes” allowing him only one shot on Newtown’s goal.

U11 Net Rippers Second

The Net Rippers finished the Newtown soccer tourney second to a tough Brookfield team. After finishing off a creative Easton team 3-1, then annihilating Watertown 7-1, Newtown lost a bruiser to Brookfield 5-1. Newtown fell to Brookfield, again, 4-0 in the championship, despite great efforts by twin middies Nick “Hello” Harper and “Jumpin’” Josh Harper, with “Mighty” Matt Gerbo’s relentless attacks on the net. Nice moves by Evan “Can’t-Touch-This” Eggleston, protected “Double Dipping” CJ Trivers in goal. Extraordinary defensive play all weekend by “Hungry” Hunter Procaccini, James “Battle Axe” Barden, “Rockin’” Ryan Brello, and “Superslick” Silas Decker fueled the team. “Beastly” Brendan O’Hara and Grant “Lightning” Larson were quick on the pitch, with birthday boys “Magic” Mark Hall and “Amazin’” Aiden Ford tearing it up.
