An Outpouring

Of Goodwill

To the Editor:

Once again, the people and organizations of Newtown came together to provide a Thanksgiving meal for Newtown’s needy families. Women Involved in Newtown’s annual “Thanksgiving Basket” program took in food donations and parceled them out to about 80 families the Friday before Thanksgiving.

So many people were involved with this effort. It would be impossible to thank every one of them, but there are some groups that deserve recognition for their support. Lexington Gardens loaned us their wagons, which are indispensable when moving around these large quantities of food. Stop & Shop made it possible for us to provide milk, eggs, bread, and butter for each family. The United Methodist Church lent us their facility to use for the food exchange. The Fireside Inn provided our workers with delicious pizza. Newtown’s schools including Newtown High School (and the football team), Newtown Middle School, the Reed School, Middle Gate, Sandy Hook, and Fraser Woods also really came through. The kids, faculty, and staff of these schools adopted needy families and organized food and paper goods drives to ensure these families had enough to get them through the holiday season. Many individuals also adopted families in order to provide them with food, paper goods, and toiletries.

We at WIN find this annual outpouring of goodwill so heartening. Newtowners of all ages are so willing to help those in need. We’re proud to live in a town where such caring exists. Thank you to everyone that was involved in helping these families. Our best wishes go out to our entire community for a healthy and happy holiday season.
