Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY will be on Tuesday, December 11, from 11 am to 3 pm, at The Waterview on Route 34 on the Monroe/Newtown line, with a gourmet buffet, champagne toast, 50/50 raffle, music and entertainment. Call the Newtown Senior Center for reservations, 270-4310; $35 per person.

*Bake 2 dozen cookies and bring recipe to the COOKIE SWAP on Thursday, December 13, at 1 pm.

*Come watch HOLIDAY MOVIES every Friday at 1 pm during the month of December. Popcorn will be served.

 

Coming Up

*Christmas BINGO party on Wednesday, December 19, at 1 pm. Join in for a Christmas sing-along; RSVP to contribute hors d’oeuvres.

*The Newtown Senior Center will be closed Monday and Tuesday, December 24 and 25, for the Christmas holiday.

*A 6-week CRAFT CLASS on Japanese brush painting will be offered starting Tuesday, January 8, at 1 pm. Sign up by December 20. No new students after the first class.

 

Day Trips

*MOHEGAN SUN, Wednesday, January 23; snow date is Friday, January 25. Depart at 8 am; $26 per person.

*Ace In The Hole presents SWINGING MARDI GRAS at the Brownstone in New Jersey for a Fat Tuesday Party on Tuesday, February 5. Enjoy Big band tunes, international skating stars, circus acrobats and beads, live dancing and Dixieland marches. Depart at 9 am; cost is $77 per person.

Overnight Trips

*UCONN Women’s Basketball at Syracuse and an overnight at The Turning Stone Casino on Tuesday and Wednesday, January 15 and 16. Hotel accommodations, meal vouchers, and choice of Casino or Bingo bonus for day one and day two. Call 270-4310 for reservations; $169 pp for double; $229 pp single.

Recurring Activities

*COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*BOWLING at Brookfield Lanes for Senior “Fun Bowl,” Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 3 pm.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM, pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM movie time, knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week of

December 10–14

Monday: Fish sticks with tartar sauce and a biscuit or chicken salad sandwich on a hard roll, macaroni & cheese, peas and onions, diet fruited Jell-O with topping, orange juice.

Tuesday: Chicken orzo soup with crackers, sweet & sour pork over rice, Oriental vegetables, whole wheat bread, pineapple.

Wednesday: Lemon chicken, parsley boiled potatoes, bean and carrot blend, wheat dinner roll, fresh fruit.

Thursday: Veal roulade, buttered noodles, French green beans, rye bread, coffee cake.

Also, for planning ahead—

Monday: December 17: Portuguese chicken, Spanish rice, green beans, whole wheat bread, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday: December 18: Seafood salad on lettuce w/tomato, marinated beet salad, Portuguese roll, grape juice, fresh fruit.
