The United States Postal Service spokesperson Maureen Marion confirmed Thursday, March 11, that the new Hawleyville Post Office site will open for full service, Monday, March 15, at 23 Barnabas Road, at 8:30 am, with a brief ceremony scheduled at the close of that day. The original Route 25 post office was closed in February 2009.
Upon receipt of the information from the USPS, Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement regarding the imminent opening of the new facility:
âIâm so proud of the Hawleyville residents who rallied around their post office and found a way to take on a fight that on its face seemed unwinnable.â
In 2007, residents contacted Congressman Murphyâs office to alert him to the fact that the Hawleyville Post Office was in disrepair. Congressman Murphy credited pressure from his office and the determination of citizen activists with attaining approval to move the Route 25 post office in Hawleyville to a new location at a time when the USPS was closing facilities across the nation due to financial stress.
Members of the Save Hawleyville Post Office Committee, headed by Newtown resident Ann Marie Mitchell, said that they planned to be on hand Monday morning to celebrate the reopening of the post office. The public is invited to attend.
