Motorist Hits Parked DOT Truck On I-84
State police report a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 84 that involved a state Department of Transportation (DOT) work truck that was parked in an active construction zone.
State police said a DOT International truck was parked in a work zone on westbound I-84 at about 1:51 pm December 1, when westbound motorist Billy Penn, 24, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1996 Honda Accord, struck the rear crash barrier affixed to the DOT truck.
After that impact, the Honda went into an uncontrolled spin on the highway and struck motorist Susan Helbing, 41, of Danbury, who was driving a 2005 Audi S-4 in the single open travel lane on westbound I-84, state police said.
Newtown ambulance volunteers transported Penn to Danbury Hospital where he was treated for injuries and then released, state police said. State police charged Penn with reckless driving. Penn was scheduled to appear in court on December 10.
