Newtown Historical Society will host an open house at its headquarters, The Matthew Curtiss House, on Sunday, March 16, from noon to 4 pm.

Rebecca Arkenberg will be the afternoon’s special guest. Ms Arkenberg, a textile artist and art historian from Stratford who has been a previous guest of the historical society, will give a weaving demonstration on her portable loom and tell the story of Silas Burton, an 18th Century weaver. In addition, she will bring cardboard looms to teach weaving to any visitors that would like to try their hand at the timeless craft.

The public is also invited to visit and tour the building at 44 Main Street. Admission is free; however, donations are welcomed and appreciated. Junior and senior docents will be available to answer questions about the house and its history, as well as provide guided tours by request.

The Matthew Curtiss House, a fine example of Connecticut saltbox architecture, was constructed circa 1750 and purchased by Matthew Curtiss Jr in 1781. Newtown Historical Society purchased the house in 1970 and restored the house to its original condition.
