NHS Stadium Name To Change

By Tanjua Damon

People attending sports events and other school competitions at the Newtown High School stadium will see the stadium’s name change in the near future.

The Newtown Board of Education was presented with suggested names for the stadium, which is currently known as Bruce Jenner Stadium, Tuesday night at a workshop meeting. The board was given two names – The Blue and Gold Sport Stadium and the Harold S. DeGroat and Ann Anderson Sports Complex.

Both names will be used if approved by the board. The Blue and Gold Sport Stadium will replace what is now called the Bruce Jenner Stadium, where many home sports games and band competitions are held.

The Harold S. DeGroat and Ann Anderson Sports Complex will be the name of the back fields at Newtown High School. The school district currently has a construction project under review to expand the sports field at the high school from three and a half to eight fields.

The project cost is expected to range from $600,000 to $800,000 to complete. Some of those costs are eligible for reimbursement from the state.

School board members will review and vote on the name changes at their next board meeting on Wednesday, October 10, at 7 pm at Canaan House at Fairfield Hills.
