Meserve Memorial Fund Awards Grants To Local Organizations

DANBURY –– The Meserve Memorial Fund has awarded grants totaling $71,105 to 17 area agencies.

The Family Counseling Center, Inc, of Newtown, will receive $4,000 to purchase equipment for a new phone system. The Merryhill Child Care Center was awarded $2,291 to upgrade an outdoor play area and purchase play equipment.

The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard at Fairfield Hills will receive $5,000 to purchase materials, including five saddles, for a horseback riding program for disabled adults and children.

Other awards included $5,000 to Junior Achievement of Western Connecticut, Inc for program development; $7,200 to Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut for four new laptop computers; $2,400 to Shelter of the Cross, Inc, in Danbury for computer equipment; $8,475 to Women’s Center of Greater Danbury for a copy machine; $5,479 to the Girl Scout Council of Southwestern Connecticut, Inc, for programming; $2,000 to the Housatonic Valley Association for the riverbelt greenway initiative.

Also, $5,000 was awarded to Ann’s Place, The Home of I CAN, to purchase a copy machine; $2,000 to CityCenter Danbury to support the annual festival; $700 to the Danbury Garden Club for a perennial garden in front of the Danbury Senior Center; $4,000 to the Early Care & Education Training Institute for a literacy, math, and science enhancement project; $3,030 to the Obey Foundation for equipment and youth performances; $5,530 to Ridgefield Preservation Trust for a security system; $5,000 to the Student Outreach Program for summer school/camp; and $4,000 to TheatreWorks to purchase a sound and lighting control station.

The Meserve Memorial Fund was established in 1983, a legacy of the late Mr and Mrs Albert W. Meserve, to support charitable organizations that benefit the Danbury region. The region includes Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, Ridgefield, Sherman, and Bridgewater. The fund is administered by the Fairfield County Community Foundation in Wilton.

In addition to providing grants twice a year to local organizations, the Meserve Fund also operates scholarship program open to area high school seniors and college students pursuing a degree in environmental sciences. This year 26 scholarships of $2,500 each were awarded. High school seniors and college freshmen who received first-time scholarship awards this year included Whitney Blanchard and James Kaechele of Newtown.
