Interact Club Launches Coins For The Cure Campaign

The Interact Club of Newtown Middle School had a guest speaker on Wednesday, March 30. Ginny Chion launched the fourth annual Coins For The Cure — To Wipe Out Leukemia.

This campaign consists of distributing blue-covered coffee cans to each of the clusters as well as cans for spare change at the checkouts in the cafeteria. The goal is to collect spare change and donate it to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Fairfield County. This has always been a successful campaign and has raised a substantial sum for patient care and research. The campaign will take place during April and May.

Blue-covered cans will also be seen around town, at Prudential Connecticut Realty, Newtown Deli, Citgo Gas Stop on Route 25, Drug Center and Stop & Save Liquors. If anyone is interested in having a can to collect coins, call 426-0851.

Coins For The Cure began in April 2001 in memory of Greg Chion who lost his battle with leukemia. He was 17 years old. Greg was a senior at Newtown High School who was active in band, boys’ swimming and diving, and yearbook.

Leukemia is the No. 1 disease-caused death of children under the age of 14.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society also is having its first Light The Night Walk at Western Connecticut State University on September 24. This is the first event scheduled in the Danbury area. Light The Night Walks will be again at Trumbull High School and Norwalk.
