MILFORD – The Newtown High School girls’ soccer team might be young, but it is showing itself – already – to be pretty strong.

The Nighthawks, who were prevented from opening their season last Friday because of rain, waited until Monday to defeat Jonathan Law, 6-0. Sophomore Chelsea Morin got her season off on the right foot with three goals to fuel the offensive attack.

Kristin Davis, Morgan Haines and Carrie Lipnick also scored. April Scheuerell and Allison Frobey had two assists apiece while Davis and Kate Fenton made one assist each. Goaltender Allison Smith made four saves in net.

The 1-0-0 ‘Hawks also received quality performances from sophomore Kelley Haines, senior Kim Helfer, and freshman Mary Anders.

Field Hockey Tie

BETHEL – The Newtown High School field hockey team opened the 2001 season last Wednesday with a 0-0 struggle in Bethel. The ‘Hawks outshot the Wildcats, 5-3, and goaltender Heather Morgan made three saves.

The ‘Hawks, 0-0-1, were slated to travel to Weston last Friday, but rain caused the postponement of that contest until later this month. The ‘Hawks returned to the field on Thursday for a home game against New Milford.

The rest of the week will find the ‘Hawks in Monroe to face Masuk on Saturday, September 22, and then back home on Monday, September 24, for a tough game against Pomperaug.

Next Wednesday, the ‘Hawks will travel to Redding to take on Joel Barlow.
