The Nighthawks, who were prevented from opening their season last Friday because of rain, waited until Monday to defeat Jonathan Law, 6-0. Sophomore Chelsea Morin got her season off on the right foot with three goals to fuel the offensive attack.
Kristin Davis, Morgan Haines and Carrie Lipnick also scored. April Scheuerell and Allison Frobey had two assists apiece while Davis and Kate Fenton made one assist each. Goaltender Allison Smith made four saves in net.
The 1-0-0 âHawks also received quality performances from sophomore Kelley Haines, senior Kim Helfer, and freshman Mary Anders.
Field Hockey Tie
BETHEL â The Newtown High School field hockey team opened the 2001 season last Wednesday with a 0-0 struggle in Bethel. The âHawks outshot the Wildcats, 5-3, and goaltender Heather Morgan made three saves.
The âHawks, 0-0-1, were slated to travel to Weston last Friday, but rain caused the postponement of that contest until later this month. The âHawks returned to the field on Thursday for a home game against New Milford.
The rest of the week will find the âHawks in Monroe to face Masuk on Saturday, September 22, and then back home on Monday, September 24, for a tough game against Pomperaug.
Next Wednesday, the âHawks will travel to Redding to take on Joel Barlow.
