NHS Tennis and Track Postseason Update

On the tennis courts

Two of Newtown High School’s boys’ doubles teams advanced all the way to the South-West Conference’s individual tournament finals and fell to opponents from Weston at Wolfe Park in Monroe on May 30. Newtown’s No. 2 doubles tandem of Joe Cappiello and Colin Jacobs, lost a three-set match to Weston’s Dan Toutougi and Adam Gellar, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. The No. 3 doubles duo of Dan Cassidy and Connor Howell lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) to Weston’s Drew Jamre and Greg Dwyre. Timo Roehrs and Casey Tenney reached the third round of the Class LL state tourney before being knocked out this week.

In girls’ tennis, Newtown’s Christina Ciamarra and Katie Serock fell in the second and third rounds, respectively, of the State Open this week.

On track

In the Class LL state meet in Manchester on Monday, the NHS girls were seventh with 36.50 points (Norwich Free Academy won the meet with 91 points) and the NHS boys were 20th with 7.50 points (Danbury, with 126, won the meet).

Elise DeRoo won first place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 5:06.67 and was second in the 3200 (11:17.36). Sarah Pollock was 19th in the 3200 (50.56). Natalie Villa placed 21st in the 800 (2:32.89). Lauren Pettinelli was 13th in the 300 hurdles (50.56). Newtown had four high-jumpers among the best at the meet: Emily Korth, Lauren Sudbey and Keegan Frobey, each of whom jumped 4-8 and tied for 10th, and Annika Garrett. Sudbey was second in pole vault (9-06) and Korth was eighth (9-0). Sudbey placed seventh in long jump (16-00.50). Emily Kluga was 11th in javelin (95-05). Rachel Taback came in second in the discus throw (115-08) and 12th in shot put (31-10). Jaclyn VanWaalwijk was 18th in discus (77-00).

In the boys’ meet, Ryan Hudock, Jamie Goodwick, Cody Cullens and Steve Ashbolt formed a 4x100 relay team which placed fifth overall (45.38) and came within one second of breaking the NHS record. In the 200, Goodwick (23.67) was 14th and Cullens (24.75) came in 23rd. In the 3200, Kevin Hoyt (9:47.51) was 10th and David Meyer (10:53.21) was 37th. In the 300 hurdles, Hodock (42.03) placed seventh and Cullens (44.91) was 21st. Goodwick was seventh in pole vault (12-0).
