Midwinter Dance Hopes To Raise The Rafters

On Saturday, February 5, Newtown Congregational Church will host a 60s-theme dance. The event will run from 6 to 10 pm in the Great Room of the church, 14 West Street.

Hot dogs, popcorn and other light refreshments including homemade desserts will be served.

Tickets are $10 per person, $30 per family. Music from the 60s will be played all evening. Live musicians will perform acoustic selections for the opening portion of the evening, and a DJ will provide music for the remainder of the dance, with plenty of time for dancing and socializing planned. Costumes are strongly encouraged.

There will also be a silent auction.

All proceeds from the dance will go to the Friends of Autistic People’s (FAP) Farm Project. FAP, a 501(c)(3) organization, is planning to build the first tri-state prototype of an organic farm academy, to be situated in Sandy Hook and which will have as small a carbon footprint as possible.

The farm will be an ideal setting for most adult children with autism who have aged out of the system at age 18 to 21. They will live, learn, work, and thrive when their aging or burnt out parents can no longer care for them. They will receive an individualized, continuing nature-based education and autism specific educational tools such as alternative speech/communication, sensory integration, and art and music intervention; horse- and dog-assisted animal therapies will be provided depending on funds.

They will also learn meaningful skills supported by well trained, caring staff who will help them reach their maximum potential.

The farm will be a therapeutic farm. It will provide a sense of community as well as of security for its residents through its organic “built-in” work and feast day routines. Newly learned skills will allow residents to exercise as much self determination as possible.
