HealingNewtown Offering Clay Dates, Writing Workshops & Ukulele Lessons
From strumming a ukelele and writing from the hear to creating clay masterpieces, workshops for myriad interests have been scheduled at HealingNewtown, housed at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street. Saturday Clay Dates, with Karen Pinto and Rosiland Liljengren, for ages 9-90, continue the second Saturday of each month from 1 to 3 pm.
Each two-hour workshop will concentrate on a different technique for hand-building with clay. No prior experience is necessary.
Participants will work on their own projects while exploring the methods of coil (March 8), or slab-building (April 12). Finished pieces will be picked up at a later date once they have been fired.
Students under 16 must be accompanied by participating adult.
All materials and supplies are provided. Due to limited enrollment, reservations are required for these sessions. Donations are accepted, and 15 percent of the proceeds will benefit HealingNewtown Summer Art Programs.
Creative Writing for Adults, will be led by educator, poet and writing coach Reggie Mara on Saturdays, March 8 (theme: Self Compassion/Acceptance I) and March 22 (theme: Self Compassion/Acceptance II). Each workshop runs from 10 am until noon.
Attend one or two. There is a requested donation of $10, payable at the door. Registration is appreciated.
Asian Brushwork Painting with Mary Barrett-Anders, through Parem Hwah Asian Brushwork, for ages 9-90, will be offered on Sunday, March 23, from 2 to 4 pm.
The class will focus on painting chrysanthemums.
There is a $10 donation requested for this class.
The class is filling; registration is appreciated.
Connor Taylor from Guitar Center Studio will be leading an eight week Intergenerational Ukulele Workshop. The class is limited to two Newtown High School seniors, two Newtown Middle School and two Reed Intermediate students, and two Newtown senior citizens.
Classes will be one hour in duration and will meet on Mondays, April 7 to May 26. There will be an additional ninth week to mentor with a Newtown High School Best Buddy.
Fee is 75, which covers the weekly workshops, Hal Leonard Method One Lesson Book, use of Ukulele, a certificate of course completion, and one free private lesson at Guitar Center Studios.
