Newtownâs Board of Selectmen has recommended that the Edmond Town Hall Board of Managers consider increasing the price of movie tickets at town hall by ten centsâ¦. The selectmen recommended the managers raise movie prices to $1.10 to raise an additional $5,000.

The fifith graders at Hawley School have continued to keep abreast of activities in Iran and its neighboring countries. To complement daily discussions, a current events bulletin board, and educational television broadcasts, students have recently listened to three guest speakers who gave the students first-hand information about Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.

Prospects for an antique sleigh rally scheduled for February 17 at Dickinson Memorial Town Park look dim right now. Unless the area is hit with a good snowstorm by at least February 24, the makeup date, the event will be canceled.

The Newtown High School Dramatics Club started off with what looks like a successful future when it presented a performance, âSeventeenth Summer,â last Thursday, February 10 at 8:15 pm at the Edmond Town Hall. This was the first production of the newly organized dramatics club and the audience gave it enthusiastic applause.

 Despite the snow, 17 hardy seekers after knowledge gathered at Cyrenius H. Booth Library on Monday evening, February 14, for a discussion of Immanuel Kantâs Prolegomena, under the leadership of Dr Marcus Backer of the Yale School of Medicine.

 Newtown will again be used as a sample area for a study to be conducted by the Survey Research Center of the University of Michigan. The study will focus on the changing size of the American family as a factor in the rapid national population increase. Interviewers will use the ârandom samplingâ method and will spend about an hour at the homes selected.

An unfortunate and unusual fire occurred early Monday morning, destroying the two houses of Albert OâDell on Still Hill Road in Sandy Hook. The cause of the blaze in the second house has not been definitely determined. By the time it was discovered, however, the firemen had used all of the available water on the four fire trucks at the scene, and there was little that could be done to save the structure.

An analysis of some economic relationships between Newtown and Danbury was presented by Albert F. Clear, Jr, president of the Danbury Chamber of Commerce at a meeting of the Newtown Rotary Club on Monday, January 31, to stress the need for town planning in Newtown to solve the problems concerned with the townâs future growth.

A special study of milk consumption is being conducted by Yale University in conjunction with the State Department of Education. Milk will sell for five cents per bottle for a three month period starting February 2 through April 30. Inasmuch as this study is in conjunction with schools having a lunch program, it affects only the high school and milk at Hawley School will still be at the usual price.

 An informal meeting of a group of local citizens was held at St Roseâs Casino, Saturday night, to consider the formation of a Rotary Club in Newtown. The meeting was addressed at length by Vernon H. Hodges of New Haven, governor of the 30th district, comprising part of New England. Mr Hodges was full of enthusiasm and pep.

Ezra J. Hall, the veteran plumber and tinsmith, sustained a fall last week, slipping and falling back on to the steps and injuring his back. Mr Hall is 78 years old, keen as a brier, and going strong.

Some of us are a little slow in expressing our patriotism. Lincolnâs Day there were no flags floating from private residences, from the residence of Mrs S.C. Glover to A.T. Nettletonâs, except on the flag pole on the street. Surely the name of the great Lincoln is worthy all the honor we can pay it.

The entertainment committee of the Menâs Club have engaged Fosterâs Entertainers as the closing attraction in the winterâs course of entertainments under their auspices, to appear Tuesday evening, February 21, at the Town Hall. The entertainers comprise three talented young ladies.

S.H. Bluman, the Sandy Hook dry goods dealer, met with an accident one day last week. One runner of his movable store gave way, pitching him into the snowdrift near the market. He was under one runner and his horse was becoming unmanageable, when Gus Betts and Blacksmith Kelly rushedto his assistance. Luckily, Mr Bluman escaped serious injury.

A handsome set of volumes, including all the lectures of Stoddard, have been added to the High School library. The students will meet the expense in part. A special price of $39 was paid for the set.

Edwin T. Hook of Botsford Hill had the misfortune, last week, to lose a good driving horse.
