NEWBURGH, N.Y. â The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is showing âMountain and Valley Views, The Hudson Valley and the Catskill Mountains,â oils, watercolors and monotypes by area artist Patti Ferrara, through February 28.
Ferrara celebrates her lifelong passion for the Hudson River-Catskills Mountain region in which she has lived since childhood. Inspired by the same dramatic landscape that drew Thomas Cole and Frederic Church to the area, she carries on the tradition of the Hudson River School of painting in richly evocative oils and watercolors, capturing the majestic beauty of the scene with pen and brush. A devoted student of the masters, she nevertheless expresses an original artistic vision in rendering the local scene.
Widely honored throughout the area, Ferrara has received solo shows in the Greene County Information Center as well as in public and private venues in New York State such as Hudson, Hunter, Saugerties. Her work has appeared in juried shows in Woodstock, N.Y., and Norwalk, Conn., and received awards for drawing (Greene County Arts and Crafts Guild, 1993), photography (Haines Falls Annual Art Show, 1993) and printmaking (Columbia Greene Community College, 1994, and Woodstock Artists Association, 2001).
Her work is in private and public collections throughout the area and is on permanent display at the Catskill Foundationâs Hunter Theater. Her âView from Olanaâ was selected for the 2003 calendar âArt of the Hudson Valleyâ both for the month of April and as the cover illustration. Widely published in Hudson Valley Magazine, Northeast Antiques, and elsewhere, she has also provided illustrations for books and produced several books of her own.
The Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum is at 94 Broadway across from City Hall. For more information, www.karpeles.com or 845-569-4997.
