Around The World Through Reading

By Laurie Borst

Second graders at Middle Gate School explored different types of literature through the “Around the World Through Reading” project. Teacher Tisha McCoy’s students completed a project or wrote a report for each book they read. Books were selected from among seven genres of literature. Each genre equated to a continent, hence the “around the world” theme.

Emily Newman said her favorite genre was biography. She read a book about gymnast Nadia Comenici. Monica Butler’s favorite was American League Central. “I like baseball and the book had a lot of information,” she said.

Some of the projects the students created included an erupting volcano and a “Galileo Presentation,” where the students dropped rocks from the top of the playground equipment, emulating Galileo’s gravity experiments atop the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
