Throwing Food At Newtown

To the Editor:

My wife and I walk our dog through the hills of Bennett’s Bridge, Lakeview Terrace, and the neighboring communities daily. Habitually, we carry bags to pick up the assortment of trash and recyclables tossed haphazardly out windows of automobiles. We take the same stroll the very next day to find a new variety left behind.

While this causes us to shake our heads in disbelief, littering has taken to new heights. The roads are now strewn with fresh fruits and vegetables all the time. The harvest season is not upon us yet and, even so, I don’t think I’ve ever seen orange trees in New England growing next to strawberry plants and carrots! A waste of food! Now, it may not seem like a big concern, these are at least biodegradable materials, but some fail to realize how this attracts wildlife to the roadsides only to be hit by a passing motorist.

So, for the sake of all that call Newtown a great place to live, leave your windows up and keep our roads safe and beautiful for all to enjoy. Thank you.
