Coins For The Cure

To the Editor:

Newtowners will be seeing blue cans around town in the month of April. The donations are for Coins for the Cure – Wipe Out Leukemia. Attached to the cans, you will see bookmarks that contain the warning signs of leukemia. Although the information came from the Fairfield County Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, it was designed by one of our Newtown neighbors, Trish Dardine. Trish is a neighbor of Emily Montoya, who was diagnosed with leukemia last fall. We want to offer our thanks not only for the attractive design, but for donating her time and materials. The bookmarks are readily available at the Booth Library.

This campaign is dedicated to my 17-year-old son, Greg, who was diagnosed with AML Leukemia in January, 2000. Greg did not survive this disease. Please be familiar with the warnings signs of this killing disease. It is killing our children. It is the number-one disease that is killing our children between the ages of 2 and 14. Nationally, 106,700 new cases were diagnosed last year. Connecticut had 1,400 new cases.

Please help us with your donations, but help our children. Learn the warning signs, speak to your doctor. Don’t have your child’s life taken from him.

Sincerely,

Ginny Chion
