Construction Site

Overnight on August 20–21 and on August 21–22, someone stole items including framing squares, air hoses, and sledge hammers from a home construction site at Lot 10 on Butternut Ridge Road, off Butterfield Road, police report. Butternut Ridge is a new residential subdivision.

The theft constitutes third degree larceny, representing the loss of more than $1,000 worth of goods. Police are investigating and ask those with knowledge of the crimes to contact them at 426-5841.

Huntingtown Accident

Motorist Danny Booth, 21, of Monroe, who was driving a 1989 Ford Tempo northward near 155 Huntingtown Road about 9:42 am August 25, drove off the road in a one-vehicle accident, police report. Booth was not injured. Police issued Booth a written warning for making a restricted turn.

Hedge Trimmer

Police report that someone stole a new orange Black & Decker-brand hedge trimmer from a High Bridge Road residence recently. The tool is worth $60. Police are investigating and ask anyone with information on the theft to contact them at 270-8888.

Moving Violations

Police said they stopped motorist Michael Marquardt, 20, of New Milford on Queen Street about 11 pm August 31 because he was driving a vehicle without its tail lamps illuminated.

On investigating, police charged Marquardt with driving a vehicle without illuminated tail lamps, driving while under suspension, misuse of marker plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without automotive insurance.

After processing the charges against Marquardt, police released him on a $300 bond for a September 16 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

 

Toyota Damaged

Police said a local man parked his 1997 Toyota 4-Runner sport-utility vehicle for about 15 minutes on the evening of August 20 at Sand Hill Plaza at 228 South Main Street. On returning to the Toyota, the man found that someone had smashed in the passenger-side window, causing $200 in damage. Police ask anyone with knowledge of who vandalized the Toyota to contact them at 426-5841.

Pond Brook Theft

Police report that someone stole a residential mailbox valued at $100 from its position along the road in front of 24 Pond Brook Road. The theft occurred on August 26–27. Police are investigating.

 

Shoes Missing

Police said they are investigating the theft of a pair of woman’s shoes from the women’s restroom/locker room at Newtown Country Club at 1 Country Club Road. Police learned of the shoe theft on August 31. The incident is a case of fifth degree larceny.

Items Found

Police are holding for safekeeping two found items that were recently turned over to them. They are a two-foot-long bayonet and a red plastic ice scraper. The items were found together. The owner should contact Sgt Darlene Froehlich at the police station, telephone 426-5841, to claim the items.

DUI Charge

Police report they stopped motorist Scott Sigmund, 26, of 12 Pond Brook at about 10:30 pm August 29 for driving on Main Street without having his rear marker plate illuminated.

Police said that Sigmund failed field sobriety testing. Police charged Sigmund with driving under the influence, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and failure to have his rear marker plate illuminated.

After processing the arrest, police released Sigmund on a $250 bond for a September 16 appearance in Danbury Superior Court to answer the charges.

 

Eyeglasses

A citizen turned over to police for safekeeping a pair of prescription eyeglasses with brown/gold frames, which were found on Osborn Hill Road in Sandy Hook. Police received the optics on the afternoon of August 28. The owner may claim them at the police station at 3 Main Street.

Hyundai Vandalized

While it was parked in a driveway at 85 Walnut Tree Hill Road overnight on August 25–26, someone smashed in the rear window and scratched and dented the rear hatch of a 1997 Hyundai Elantra, police said. Police ask anyone with information on the matter to contact them at 426-5841.

Lakeview Crash

Motorist Aaron Lavigne, 21, of 4 Cedarhurst Trail was driving a 1990 Eagle Talon eastward on Lakeview Terrace about 12:45 am August 29, when a deer appeared in the road, police said. Lavigne swerved to the right to avoid the animal, but went off the eastbound road shoulder and struck a utility pole, police said.

Lavigne was not injured. The electric and telephone utilities went to the accident to make repairs. Police issued Lavigne an infraction ticket for making an improper turn and driving an unregistered motor vehicle.

Triumph

Motorcyclist Richard Perry, 61, of 70 Jeremiah Road was driving a 2001 Triumph Sprint-S eastward on Jeremiah Road behind a line of traffic at about 2:30 pm August 29, when a vehicle up ahead made a turn, resulting in the vehicle in front of the motorcycle stopping suddenly, police said.

Perry then made a sudden stop but lost his balance, resulting the motorcycle going into a slide on the road, police said. The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported Perry to Danbury Hospital for treatment of shoulder and knee injuries, police said.

Police verbally warned Perry for following too closely.

Currituck MVA

Police report a two-car accident at the four-way intersection of Currituck, Obtuse, and Hawleyville roads about 12:20 pm August 27.

Motorist Stanley Carien, 31, of Woodbury, who was driving a 1994 Toyota Celica, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection and was planning to turn right onto northbound Hawleyville Road, police said. Motorist Barbara Kelchner, 74, of 12 Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was driving a 1999 Honda Civic, was stopped behind the Toyota, police said.

The Honda then struck the Toyota from behind, police said. There were no injuries. Police gave Kelchner a written warning for following too closely.

Exit 10 Ramp

Motorist Samantha Ueckerman, 16, of 56 Botsford Hill Road was driving a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant on westbound Interstate 84’s Exit 10 on-ramp at about 3:43 pm September 1, when the auto skidded on the slippery road and struck steel guard cabling alongside the ramp, state police said. Ueckerman was not injured. State police said she was traveling too fast for conditions.

Honda Vs Sign

Motorist Emily Stefanko, 18, of 71 Philo Curtis Road, who was driving a 1996 Honda Civic on Huntingtown Road about 10 pm September 1, was negotiating a curve in the road and slowing for a narrow bridge, when her vehicle skidded off the road and struck a street sign, police said.

The Honda then rolled onto its right side, coming to rest against a tree, police said. Stefanko was not injured. Police issued her a written warning for traveling too fast for conditions.

 

Sandy Hook Accident

Police said motorist Brosius Huston, 79, of 46 Jeremiah Road, who was driving a 1997 Oldsmobile 88 sedan on the afternoon of September 3, was traveling eastward on Church Hill Road and making a right turn into a business’s parking lot in Sandy Hook Center, when the Oldsmobile was struck from behind by a 1977 Dodge camper driven by Brian Schmidt, 18, of 61 Great Quarter Road. There were no injuries. Police issued Schmidt a written warning for following too closely.
