Califano To Discuss Substance Abuse Among Women

DANBURY — Former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Joseph A. Califano, Jr, will discuss the factors that influence the risk of female substance abuse and those that lead to female substance abuse problems during a lecture at Western Connecticut State University next month.

Mr Califano will address “Substance Abuse: American Attitudes and Pathways Among Girls and Young Women” at 8 pm on Thursday, April 10, in Warner Hall on the WestConn midtown campus, 181 White Street. The lecture will be hosted by the Office of the School of Professional Studies. The event will be free, and the public is invited. Seating is limited. For reservations call 837-8576.

“Those who attend the lecture will have the opportunity to hear Mr Califano share his far-reaching insight about a topic that affects our entire health care system and our society as a whole,” said WestConn President James R. Roach.

Joseph Califano is founding chairman of the board and president of The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, an independent nonprofit research center affiliated with Columbia University in New York City. He is an adjunct professor of public health (health policy and management) at Columbia University’s Medical School (Department of Psychiatry) and School of Public Health. And he is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr Lynne Clark, dean of the School of Professional Studies, said Mr Califano will address a subject that is of increasing importance as statistics show that millions of American women are struggling with substance abuse problems.
