Handgun Safety Courses
Town police report that the National Rifle Association (NRA) will be holding a series of upcoming one-day handgun safety courses for the public.
The courses will be held in New Milford on Saturday, August 23; Saturday, September 13; Sunday, September 21; Saturday, October 11; and Sunday, October 19.
The one-day courses are intended to impart basic knowledge and skills concerning handgun use, as well as foster appropriate attitudes for using and owning a handgun, according to Herbert Fuhrman, a NRA handgun instructor.
The NRA course focuses on gun safety and responsible gun ownership. It is intended for people who come into contact with firearms.
Mr Fuhrman explains that completing the handgun safety course is required for applying for a state handgun permit in Connecticut and in most other states.
The course will provide information on pistol parts and firearm operation, as well as ammunition, the principles of gun safety, and shooting fundamentals. The course will cover Connecticut firearms laws.
A written examination on gun safety and a qualification session on the firing range is held at each one-day course.
Each student in the course will receive a certificate of completion, if they meet course requirements, according to Mr Fuhrman. Seating for the handgun safety courses is limited.
