Shepaug Bald Eagle Observation Area Preparing For December 26 Public Opening

SOUTHBURY — Reservations are being taken now for The Shepaug Bald Eagle Observation Area in Southbury, which will open for its 23rd season on December 26.

The Observation Area is run by FirstLight Power Resources, owner and operator of the Housatonic River Project hydroelectric facilities. Observation times for the 2007-08 season are Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 9 am and 1 pm from December 26 through March 12.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come and view these majestic creatures in their natural habitat,” said Gary Smolen, coordinator of FirstLight’s eagle observation program. “The area is situated to help minimize any disruption to the visiting eagles as they feed for their winter survival. It’s truly a unique experience that people will not soon forget.”

Admission is free of charge, but advance reservations are required. To make reservations for individuals, families, and groups, call toll-free at 800-368-8954 between 9 am and 3 pm Tuesday through Friday. Bird enthusiasts and environmental organizations throughout the Northeast and around the country have visited the observation area in years past, so it is important to call for reservations as soon as possible.

The Shepaug Dam area is a popular spot for eagles in winter months when the turbulence below the dam keeps the water from freezing over and the fish provide a ready food source. Local experts report an average of eight eagles a day feeding at the dam this time of year. Other birds seen in the area include red-tail hawks, sharp-shinned hawks, goshawks, great blue herons, and a variety of waterfowl.

Specialists will be onsite with high-powered telescopes to help visitors see the eagles in action and to answer questions about America’s national symbol. Visitors are encouraged to dress warmly since the observation area is unheated and to bring binoculars if possible, given the limited number of onsite telescopes.
