Talk Of Slavery
Town Historian Dan Cruson gave a special lecture on the history of slavery in Newtown to the members of Newtown Womanâs Club earlier this month.
When the group met at Stony Hill Inn, they heard about some of Mr Crusonâs most recent discoveries from his soon to be published book, The Slaves of Central Fairfield County, including the latest discoveries of spirit marks and a concealment shoe at the house of the former slave Cato Freedom. Mr Cruson also shared information about the discovery of Newtown Baptist Church Records that establish Cato and his family as founding members of that church.
The club meets monthly and is dedicated to raising funds for variety of community programs. Its current president is Peg Forbell.
