Three-Vehicle Crash Causes I-84 Backup

A three-vehicle accident, which occurred midway between Exits 11 and 10 on westbound Interstate 84 during the morning rush on Tuesday, September 23, caused extended travel delays, with heavy commuter traffic backing up behind the crash.

State police said motorist Priy Khan Hill, 26, of Missouri City, Texas, who was driving a 2001 Ford pickup truck, lost control of the pickup about 7 am and collided with the front end of a United Parcel Service tractor-trailer truck driven by Michael Gizzie, 44, of Wolcott. When the vehicles came to the rest, the pickup truck had become perpendicularly pinned to the grill of the tractor-tractor truck in the center lane of the three-lane highway.

Also, a 2002 GMC auto driven by James Fitzpatrick, 29, Danbury, was struck in the accident, state police said. The GMC came to rest along a median guardrail about 100 yards west of the other two vehicles.

State police said there were no injuries. State police said Hill was traveling unreasonably fast in the Ford, and added that the accident remains under investigation.

Sandy Hook firefighters went to the accident to assist.
