It’s A Dog’s Life—

Dogs Like Presents Too!

By Mary Jane Anderson

Most dogs like the holiday season with all the wonderful smells from the kitchen and many packages to examine. But with all the rush of the season, do not forget to reward your faithful companion by wrapping a few gifts for your dog to find and unwrap under the tree on Christmas morning.

Here are a few ideas of gifts your dog would love to open:

Favorite snacks like rawhide chews, especially the gravy-basted chews. Instead of wrapping a package of chews or treats, why not wrap one at a time and extend the week by putting one out each day so your dog will enjoy them the entire week. There are crunchy bite-size bagels, dog bones, biscuits and flavorful treats with marrow in the center. Snacks are a reward for a job well done.

Mealtime is always a happy time for your dog. You do not have to call him for dinner since he hears the can opener working, a drawer or cabinet opened and the rustle of the dog food bag. Why not turn dinner time festive with a colorful pottery food bowl, with his name printed on the side and a matching water bowl to complete the holiday season.

How about some new toys? There are many on the market. Toys can give your dog mental stimulation, exercise and relief from boredom. There are squeaker toys that can motivate play. Toys come in all shapes and sizes to fit your dog’s need. The favorite for many dogs are the “lambs wool” soft play toys in cute shapes, which becomes the dog’s best friend as he carries it around with him or you find your dog sleeping with his friend. And of course, tennis balls and Frisbees are always a favorite, as well as excellent for daily exercise.

A bright new collar and leash will give your dog a boost, and he will receive compliments on how nice he looks. Hopefully, some family member will take the dog for extra-long walks during the holiday season, which will benefit both the walker and the dog for needed exercise, especially after the holiday dinners and treats!

For warmth in the cold, snowy winter, a pet sweater will keep your dog, especially for shorthaired dogs, warm while taking their daily walks or exercising in the park.

A new bed can keep your dog warm and cozy for the long winter naps. Beds come in all shapes and sizes. Orthopedic pet beds, originally designed to reduce pressure on joints for the older dogs, can also provide a comfortable and healthy support for all dogs of any age. There are off the floor, a lounger, to keep the dog away from dirt, drafts, and moisture, which is ideal for outdoor dogs. Pet beds come in round and rectangular in sizes for the smallest or largest dog. There are also fluffy bean bag beds, beds covered in cotton, denim or fleece. All are designed for comfortable sleeping on long winter nights.

Also remember, the best gifts you can give your dog does not cost anything other than your time and appreciation for his companionship. This can be done by extra walks, playtime, ride in the car and lots of extra attention.

Happy Holidays To You and Your Dog!
