Health Center Hosts Ayurvedic Nutrition Workshop

FARMINGTON — One of the world’s preeminent Ayurvedic physicians and a University of Connecticut School of Medicine faculty member with expertise in integrative medicine will present a two-day workshop titled, “An Integrated Approach to Ayurveda and Modern Nutrition” at the UConn Health Center from 10 am to 6 pm on July 15 and 16.

Cost of the workshop is $175 for students with identification or $200 for the general public. The workshop will be conducted by Dr Vasant Lad and Dr Amala Guha.

Dr Lad is founder of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, N.M., and a frequent participant in presentations along with best-selling authors and physicians Deepak Chopra and Andrew Weil.

Dr Guha is an assistant professor of medicine, a specialist in cancer immunology, trained in Ayurvedic interventions, and is the director of the Health Center’s Complementary and Alternative Supportive Care program.

Ayurvedic medicine originated in India 6,000 years ago and combines two Sanskrit words to mean literally, “the science of life.” It has its roots in ancient vedic literature and encompasses the whole of human life — the body, mind, and spirit.

The workshop is designed so that upon completion participants will understand the components of modern diet and the concepts and principles of Ayurvedic nutrition and herbs as well as the concept of balancing the emotions with proper diet.

The first day’s presentation is “Ayurvedic Diet, Nutrition and Herbs,” which will look at modern diet and nutrition in wellness, food, and its action on bodily humors, concepts of Ayurvedic nutrition and rejuvinative tonics.

The workshop will conclude July 16 with “Balancing the Emotions with Ayurvedic Nutrition,” an examination of the actions of food and herbs, the Ayurvedic understanding of mental health, behavior and diet, and the actions of food on the mind.

The lecture is appropriate for health care professionals, students and residents, and the general public. Continuing Medical Education credits are available for participants.

Registration is required and seating is limited. Checks payable to “CASC – UCHC” should accompany registration and be mailed to Dr Amala Guha, Program Director, CASC, MC 1315, UConn Health Center, 263 Farmington Ave, Farmington, CT 06107.
