4-H Is Asking For Help With
American Soldier Goodie Bag Donations
Every year as part of the Fairfield County 4-H Fair, teens organize and conduct a countywide community service project. For 2009, their goal is to assemble 100 âgoodie bagsâ for American troops stationed overseas. Each goodie bag will contain items desired by soldiers.
4-H members are asking the community to support their efforts with donations, which need to be dropped off by September 15.
Drop-off sites are UConn Fairfield County Extension Center, 67 Stony Hill Road in Bethel (9 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday); Monkeyhead Comics, 273 Greenwood Avenue in Bethel (most days noon to 7 pm); and CTâs Beardsley Zoo Front Gate, 1875 Noble Avenue in Bridgeport (9 am to 4 pm daily).
Items being requested include 7.5- and 14.5-ounce Chef Boyardee products, 15-ounce Dinty Moore Big Bowls, 15-ounce Hormel Chili, packets of mixed nuts, peanuts, coffee, hot chocolate and cup of soup, individual servings of instant tea/fruit juice mixes, chewing gum, 2.05-ounce Easy Mac or Velveeta Shells & Cheese, snack-size cheese and cracker packets, also crackers with peanut butter packets, beef jerky/beef sticks, small jars of peanut butter, Ramen instant soups, misc seasonings (Cajun spice, paprika, etc), 2-ounce bottles of hot sauce, 5-ounce bottles of steak sauce, and hard candy (nothing with chocolate).
Also on the request list is toothpaste and toothbrushes, note paper and notecards, small containers of sunblock, Silly Putty, playing cards, card games, Peel & Seal envelopes, uninflated soccer balls and basketballs (with pins to inflate them), hand warmers, AA batteries, paperback books, Frisbees (soft or hard), puzzle books (crosswords, Soduku, word searches), CDs, DVDs, magazines, puzzles, and handheld electronic games (poker, Wheel of Fortune, etc).
Community support will not only provide the troops with much needed items, but will also help 4-H members learn skills in citizenship, leadership, personal development, and community involvement. These skills will empower them to become capable, caring and competent adults who are able to meet the needs of a diverse and changing society.                                                   Â
