Lancaster Cty Chairs At Horst
with 2 cuts

EPHRATA, PENN. -- Buyers from 23 states converged at a March 27 auction in the
heart of Lancaster County at Horst Auction Center. Five hundred thirty two
attendees competed for 629 lots, resulting in a gross of $202,057 at the
unreserved sale. The sole consignor was Rebecca Groff Schwartz, the daughter
of the late Norman M. Groff and Ida Keith Groff of Ephrata, owners of an area
gift and antiques shop, The Cloister Country Store.
Garnering the starring bid of the day, a set of six Lancaster County yellow
paint decorated Windsor style plank seat side chairs went to a dealer at
$19,000.
A collection of Lehnware inspired competitive bidding for the painted wood
items, with a water bucket, in a grained orange tone with the iron bands
having a painted pussy willow design, circa 1870's, reaching $12,000; a rare
miniature cup and saucer measuring 1¬ inches and nearly two inches
respectively, with typical salmon ground color, brought $2,400; a miniature
Lehnware chest, 13 by 7Ã by 8 inches high was purchased at $6,000; and two
larger Lehnware cup and saucer lots reached $1,600 and $1,000.
Two saffron containers in the form of wooden cups with removable lids sold at
$2,400 and $2,050; a fraktur by Christian Mertel reached $4,900; and two
watercolors by Amish folk artist Henry Lapp of Lancaster County, one a simple
bunch of pansies, 5¬ by 7à inches, realizing $4,500, and a second by Lapp, a
geometric flower design in orange, yellow, and green on lined paper, made
$4,500 and $1,500 respectively.
Two folk art watercolors by Jacob Maentel, one of a man and woman, badly damp
stained and foxed, brought $6,100 for the pair; two frakturs by the artist
known as "the cross legged angel" (active from 1791 to 1822) reached $2,600
and $3,250; a pair of jacquard coverlets in dark blue, red, green, and
natural, made by John Kachel, each dated 1847, made from two members of the
Brinley family, brought $6,300 for the two; a Lone Star pattern Lancaster
County quilt with a yellow background, achieved $2,900; and Lancaster County
punched tin dome lid coffee pot went out at $3,200.
A Peter Derr all original wrought iron gallows lamp dated 1818, pictured in
the book The House of Derr, sold at $7,800; three yellow and red rainbow
spatter cups and saucers sold individually at $1,300, $1,600, and $3,000, the
difference in price according to condition and color matching; and an
aquamarine Huiett and Fridley, Carlisle, Pennsylvania glass canning jar sold
at a jaw-dropping $2,400.
A small round brass legal document seal for a local turnpike company in
Lancaster County, circa 1814, realized $1,600; and a small Currier and Ives
print, "The Sleigh Race," garnered $2,550.
