Communicating In An Imperfect World
Communicating In An
Imperfect World
To the Editor:
First, let me say that these comments are not against Ms Baldwin, her agency, or abilities. In fact, her monthly fee is fair.
Lawyers can tell lawyer jokes, so as a communication consultant with 30 years of experience in PR/marketing, I can tell a consultant joke. âWhat is the definition of a consultant?â âAny person who lives over 50 miles away.â Baldwin Media Marketing is at least located in Connecticut (Newington).Â
Consultant is a broad term. It can mean someone who provides instruction or insights. In my role as consultant, I typically listened to my clients and found the most effective way to communicate those thoughts to the intended audience. As noted by The Bee editorial, Dr Robinson should be equipped to accomplish this herself. If a sounding board is needed, she has her administrative staff, the Board of Education, and the public.
The way that the bus contract was communicated indicates that this form of consultation either did not take place or took place ineffectively.
Consultant can also mean someone who actually accomplishes the âhands onâ work â press kit, marketing materials, website, or, in this case, a video. There are many Newtowners who produce videos for a living. In fact, if a communication committee was formed, I would write a video script for free. Iâm sure videographers, photographers, editors would also offer their services for their public school system. Many years ago, as a volunteer, my husband made a wonderful digital presentation for my sonâs elementary school.
Donât get me wrong... Especially now with income being so tight, a monthly retainer would be much appreciated (lol)!
In a perfect world, a budget includes enough money to add new teachers and educational services rather than cutting them.
In a perfect world, a communication specialist can be very instrumental for a school system â by enhancing communication both internally and externally. Effective communication is critical â otherwise I would not have devoted my life to this field. However, in such a case, the job should first be offered to a Newtown resident. I know of several communication specialists in our community who are highly qualified for such a position.
But, this not a perfect world.
