Hundredth Day Of School Celebrations

Even though snow delayed the hundredth day of school, Newtown students were not discouraged. When schools reopened last week the celebrations began.

Entering Middle Gate School Wednesday, February 7, the school community was greeted with a large number 100. The science room was filled with 315 projects made by the students. Students used various items including candy, shells, pasta noodles, buttons, and origami, making creations with 100 of a particular object.

Maureen Birden of Newtown Savings Bank talked with fifth grade students at Middle Gate about dealing with 100s at the bank. The fifth grade students were able to view a $500 dollar bill that is not made anymore. After the discussion the students received the New York State Quarter that was released in January.

On Thursday, February 8, at St Rose School kindergartners made vests out of paper bags. Each vest had 100 objects on it from butterflies to pencils to stickers to sports figures. The group of about 30 students counted 100 steps from their classroom to see where the 100th step was. They counted to the fourth grade class.

And to make the day special, the kindergartners sang a “hundred days song.”

“Hurray, Hurray today’s our hundredth day. We’ve been in school 100 days. Hurray, Hurray, Hurray!”

Student have less than 80 days of school left before summer vacation begins.
