Internships At The Palace Theater

WATERBURY — The education department of the Palace Theater is bringing back two popular hands-on internship programs. The programs, “Learning in the Wings” and “Palatial News,” take learning from the page to the stage. They are part of the theater’s SmART initiatives for teachers, which provide students with real-life training and backstage learning opportunities. Both programs run until June.

“Learning in the Wings” is a shadowing program for students 15 years and older. Students will learn from some of the most experienced backstage technicians in sound engineering, lights, wardrobe, carpentry, props, stage management, and technical direction. They may choice to follow a technician for a single evening, or to take on a weeklong internship.

During the longer internship, students will learn the difference between road, house, and shop technicians.

The Palace also hosts “Palatial News,” a theater journalism program which offers middle school and high school students the opportunity to serve as members of the press during a Palace performance. They will receive complimentary tickets and media badges to a preselected show, and when possible, backstage access to interview performers and crew members.

Student reviews will be submitted to local newspapers for possible publication. They will also be published on the Palace Theater website, and at the end of year, printed in the Palace Theater Journal.

Call the Palace Theater’s Education Department at 203-775-8483, extension 132, for more information. Applicants must submit a proper request proposal and a teacher recommendation.
