*The library will be closed on Monday, February 20, in observance of the Presidents’ Day holiday.

*OverDrive is coming to the library on February 29 and will provide access to more than 2,000 eBooks for adults and 300 titles for young adults and children. Details on how to select books and download them to your readers will be posted on our website.

*Support Local Talent: We have a nice selection of books written by local authors for sale at the library. There are titles for both young and old and all copies have been autographed.

Currently On View

*Nancy and Jim Larin have collected sculpture by Rhys Caparn, a Newtown Notable, and it is now on display near the circulation desk. Ms Caparn was a sculptor of great renown in the 20th Century, and the exhibit includes biographical information, as well as a small bust created by her in her own image.

*Theresa Berryman of Sandy Hook is sharing her many examples of the art of scherenschnitte (paper cutting) on the second floor. Her work includes traditional Pennsylvania motifs, as well as hearts, animals, and silhouettes. She also has mastered quilting, crocheting, and needlework.

Children’s Programs

*Think BIG — Designing Bridges and Domes, Hands on Science with Laurie Borst: Explore the engineering behind the design and building of bridges, skyscrapers and domes. Workshops will be offered on Wednesdays in March from 4 to 5 pm. A $3 material fee is due on the day of the program. Register online.

*Picasso: His Life and His Work: Explore the paintings of Picasso and create your own masterpiece in the Cubist style with artist Kristine Humber on Thursday, March 8, at 4 pm, for children aged 6–10. Register online. A $5 material fee is due on the day of the program.

*Singer, songwriter, and Newtown resident Francine Wheeler will lead children ages 2–5 and their caregivers in movement activities, stories, and songs on Thursday, March 15, 10 to 10:30 am. No registration required. (This program will replace the Mother Goose II program on April 12 and May 10).

YA Programs

*Battle of the Books is Saturday, March 24. This annual trivia contest will test your knowledge of four great books. Form a team of three to four people in grades 5-8 (all must be Newtown students or residents). Homeschoolers are welcome! Team captains must sign up in person and pick up a packet for team members. Signups are open through March 5 (no online signup). Prizes include $10 and $20 gift cards to a local bookstore. Copies of all the books are available at the library. The books are Gollywhopper Games by Jody Feldman, Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George, Scat by Carl Hiaasen, and Savvy by Ingrid Law.

Programs For Adults

*Build a Birdfeeder with Flanders Nature Center: Grab a hammer and nails (provided) to construct your own backyard birdfeeder on Wednesday, February 22, at 6 pm, in the meeting room of the library. Supply cost is $20. Register by calling Flanders Nature Center at 203-263-3711.

*How to Use Social Media in the Job Hunt: Linda Van Valkenburgh is offering a free workshop on how to launch a successful career search campaign via social media. Come learn about some great ways to network. The workshop is in the meeting room on Tuesday, February 28, at 7 pm. Register by calling the library or online. Refreshments will be served.

*Independent Film Series: Join us at 1 pm on Wednesdays for free screenings of The Colors of the Mountains on February 29; and Protekor on March 7.

*Book Discussion: Nonfiction Book Group: Cleopatra by Tracy Schiff , Tuesday, March 6, at 1 pm, in the Antiques Room; Evening Book Group: The Good Son by Michael Gruber, Thursday, February 16, at 7:30 pm, in the Board Room.
