Wurtz Helps Mavs To
Junior Nationals Semis
WASHINGTON, D.C. â Newtown basketball player Riley Wurtz helped the Connecticut Mavericks, an AAU program team based out of the Newtown Youth Academy, to the semifinals of the US Junior Nationalâs tournament at American University in Washington D.C. this summer.
The Mavericks, in only their second year of existence, have grown to be a recognizable and respectable AAU program led by league director and Mavs Coach Ken Good. The U15 Mavs squad, comprised of players from seven area towns, defeated teams from New Jersey, Maryland, Philadelphia, Virginia, New Hampshire, and Vancouver, Canada. The team posted a 6-1 record in the tourney.
According to Good, Wurtz, who will be a junior at Newtown High School this year, developed into one of the top players on the team. âHer athleticism, scoring ability, unselfishness, and her defensive ability was integral to our success. We leaned on her heavily throughout the season and she delivered. Newtown Coach Shawn OâBrien is going to be pleased with her play-making ability this winter.â
