RIVERHEAD, N.Y. â The Suffolk County Historical Society at 300 West Main Street houses a museum, a research library and a gift shop. Through August 17, every Wednesday and Friday at 1 pm, a different exhibit gallery will be explored in a short 30-minute guided tour. The tours will be aimed at families and children are welcome. âTouchableâ artifacts will be used during the tours and historically appropriate music will play in the background. Following each tour children can participate in a short activity session with crafts and games related to the tour topic. The tours are free of charge but a $2 per child material fee will be charged for the activity session.
Tours are: Early Transportation in Suffolk County on July 25 and 27; Native Americans on August 1 and 3; Colonial Trades on August 8 and 10 and Whaling (the captain, his family and the crew) August 15 and 17. All tours begin at 1 pm.
The SCHS is regularly open Tuesday through Saturday from 12:30 to 4:30 pm. Admission to the museum is free. For information, 516-727-2881.
