It might not have been the kind of start the Newtown High School girls’ track team could have hoped for on Tuesday, but a pair of wins by Brittany Rayzor (1,600 and 3,200 meters) and wins by Caitlyn Elf (400 meters), Allison Frobey (800 meters) and Cara Delvecchio (triple jump) are something to smile about.

The Nighthawks easily defeated New Milford in their 2001 season-opening quad meet, 91-50, but fell to both Joel Barlow (83-58) and Weston (73-68) to start off 1-2. After 14 days off, the ‘Hawks will return to the track on Tuesday, April 24, with a quad meet against Brookfield, Masuk and New Fairfield down in Brookfield.

Besides those individual first-place finishes, the ‘Hawks also finished first in the 4x400 relay and second in the 4x100 relay, and then got second-place finishes from Delvecchio (300-meter intermediate hurdles) and Whitney Blanchard (discus).

It just wasn’t enough.
