Sobriety Checkpoint Curtailed By Weather

Due to the threat of rain and thunderstorms, police curtailed a sobriety checkpoint on the night of Saturday, May 28.

The checkpoint was set up on Wasserman Way, at the commuter parking lot for Exit 11 of Interstate 84.

Police Sergeant John Cole, who was one of the supervisors at the event, said police ended the checkpoint at 9:30 pm, after about two and one-half hours, due to the threat of rain and thunderstorms in the area. The checkpoint had been scheduled to continue into the early morning hours of Sunday, May 29.

No arrests were made at the shortened checkpoint, the sergeant said.

The project was a joint effort of town police and state police.

In such checkpoints, police stop passing motorists to learn whether drivers are under the influence of alcohol or drugs. People who are suspected of being intoxicated are tested for sobriety. Violators are arrested.
